About the CEC

There are 32 Community Education Councils (CEC) in New York City. The CEC for District 2 oversees public elementary and middle schools in Community School District 2. 9 CEC members are parents of children in the district and are elected by the PTA Presidents, Treasurers and Recording Secretaries of the public and elementary and middle schools they oversee and 2 are appointed by the Borough President.

The function of the CEC is to advocate for public school families in the district and to advise the Department of Education on school policies. Any changes to school zones require approval by the CEC. CECs operate independently of the New York City Department of Education (DOE), and act as liaisons between the public and DOE. All CEC members are volunteers, receiving no compensation for their work.

The CECD2 hosts meetings every month and we always provide an opportunity for public comments. We encourage members of the community to come and participate!
